Upcoming Science Unit and Spring Break Homework

Posted on

Our upcoming unit in science will involve taking a closer look at sand & soil. Spring break is the perfect time to locate sand and soil especially if you are going on vacation. We would LOVE samples for all over the U.S. Your child brought home a note today that further explains this, along with 2 small bags for samples. If you are going away, just make sure to pack it in your suitcase. If you are remaining in the area, there are great samples to be found here. Thanks for helping your child add to our science study of sand and soil.

Force and Motion

Posted on

We are currently focusing on Force & Motion. We are looking closely at how things move. We started by talking about motion which is the movement from one place to another or physical movement like twirling, waving, etc. Things move in certain ways- according to path and direction. The students have been completing a variety of experiments measuring distance and speed, as well as, force (the push or pull). We have also looked closely at friction and gravity and are currently discussing simple machines.

Our test will be Friday, February 6th. Here is the website that contains the flashcards of key vocabulary terms that you can work on at home:NOTE CARDS.

Plant Adaptations

Here is an excellent video by Study Jams to supplement our discussion about plant adaptations. Take a moment to have your child watch the short video. There is even a quiz to “test yourself.” If your child watches it, please have them leave me a comment about something learned because I give them credit for doing some extra work.

Recycle, Reuse, Reduce

Posted on

We are focusing on the 3-Rs (Recycle, Reuse, Reduce) in science. This is a very easy unit for the students because it builds on their knowledge about natural resources. Flashcards are coming home on Tuesday, but you can visit the following link in advance if interested: http://www.easynotecards.com/notecard_set/11324 . The test will be on Thursday.

Here are a couple sites that your child can visit for an extra review &  games: http://www.recyclezone.org.uk/home_fz.aspx.html

Sound Test

Posted on

We will have a test on the sound unit on Monday, December 3rd.

The children are completing a variety of science experiments for our sound unit. This is a loud unit for the classrooms that are close to ours.  Click on Making Horns to hear what we mean. We were able to see how pitch changes with the length of the straw. We have been reviewing  the specific vocabulary terms for this unit. Your child should have brought home flashcards to practice at the beginning of the week.   An online quiz, matching game or printable flashcards can be viewed by clicking on the picture below:

If your child would like to visit websites that provide a review, as well as, allow them to experiment with sounds, instruments, pitch and vibration, click on the pictures below:
