Economics

In Social Studies we are studying economics. There are quite a few vocabulary terms to reinforce in this unit. We had a great time today shopping (both at the Santa Secret Shop and within the classroom). The children exchanged their tickets for play money to shop at my store. They were able to see how our unlimited wants and limited resources caused scarcity which meant that they couldn’t have all of the goods that they wanted. They had to make a choice. They found out that there were incentives while shopping especially when a truckload arrived. The choices that they made lead to opportunity cost. We also reinforced everything that we are learning about in math but determining/estimating our total cost, as well as, the change that we will receive.

For extra practice of the vocabulary used in this unit, Mr. Gort created on-line note cards that you can use  to practice.  This site allows you to print flashcards or complete a review online.  http://www.easynotecards.com/notecard_set/1543

Many students commented that they did not have time to study this past weekend for our Social Studies quiz on the vegetation and climate in Michigan. The scores reflected these comments. I will be reteaching the students that struggled during break time tomorrow. If your child received a score of 1, the retest will be on Wednesday. Here are some facts that you can review with your child at home:

Vegetation

  • Michigan has a lot of forests.
  • Michigan has both National and State forests.
  • In some forests trees are grown to sell to make things like paper.
  • There are a lot of forests in the upper Peninsula.
  • There are a lot of orchards in Michigan.
  • Orchards are often found along the shores of the Great Lakes.

Climate

  • Michigan has four seasons.
  • The Great Lakes affect Michigan’s climate.
  • Higher areas have colder temperatures.
  • The Upper Peninsula tends to be colder than the lower Peninsula.
  • Different parts of Michigan have different temperatures and different amounts of precipitation.

Other Important Things

  • Michigan has many state symbols.
  • The state symbols stand for the natural characteristics.
  • The robin and the apple blossom are state symbols.
  • There are a lot of different kinds of maps.

We have been talking about our wants and needs (which was a review from first grade) during Social Studies. We have also discussed goods, services, and scarcity. Today we had a guest speaker, Mrs. Raterink, from Michigan State Agriculture come into our classroom to provide us with an opportunity to practice production and distribution. We loved hearing about her dairy farm. We found out that it was not very fun to have to pay the banker after being paid for the milk that we sold. Our vocabulary for the lesson included the following terms: economics, human resource, natural resource, capital resource, producers, consumers, profit, distribution, goods, services, and production. We even used our math skills to figure out our profit. We especially loved being able to be the farmers, truckers, distributors, grocers and our favorite was the consumers. Yummy!

  • Mountains, hills, valleys and plains are landforms.
  • Bodies of water are different kinds of water on the Earth.
  • Oceans, lakes, ponds and rivers are bodies of water.
  • Communities are sometimes different because they have different landforms and bodies of water.

The children were working in partners and small groups to sort Landforms & Bodies of Water cards. They did an excellent job matching pictures, words and definitions. We will have a quiz on Friday.

We will have a Social Studies test on Tuesday. This will cover the regions of Michigan. Please help your child study the regions Michigan can be divided into, the unique regions of Michigan, and the regions of the U.S. that Michigan is a part of.

Also, please ask your child about why the regions are divided this way. What are the similar features and characteristics of the regions?

Let me know if there are any other questions.

Thanks for your support!

Social Studies Project

On Monday, a Social Studies project went home. In class we identified the Landforms, Bodies of Water, and Human characteristics of Michigan we have learned about in class. We looked at a map to see where they are in Michigan.

As part of the project your child should place these places on the map and label them. Don’t forget to make it neat and color it. There is a checklist that also goes with the project to make sure you get the full points.

We have identified these places in class, however, your child may need some guidance from parents to label correctly and find specific locations. You may also use any notes from class.

This project is due Friday, October 30.

Have fun with your map! Let me know if you have any questions!
