Math Expressions Parent Night
Tuesday, March 20, 2012 @ 7:00-8:05 PM at the Hudsonville High School Auditorium.
A Math Expressions Parent Night will be held at the high school auditorium for parents of K-5 students in the district.  Parents will hear an overview of the Math Expressions Math Program in the auditorium, followed by 3 break-out sessions: K-1st, 2nd-3rd, and 4th-5th. Break-out sessions are designed to give specific grade level support to parents.  Each break-out session will run for 20 minutes and will run two times in a row, allowing parents to attend more than one session.

Reading & Math Update

In math we are going to spend some extra time with estimating and money. In this unit, your child will be learning to estimate sums and differences by rounding numbers. They also use estimates to check that actual answers are reasonable, and compare numbers using the symbols greater than (>), less than (<) or equal to (=). The students will also identify and compare the values of a collection of U.S. coins and bills. It would be a wonderful time to have them counting change at home.

In reading, we just finished our 2nd unit focusing on visualization. The children loved the stories we were reading! They visualized to make sense of the stories we read by imagining sights, sounds, smells, tastes, sensations, and feelings. This strategy helps them to understand, remember, and enjoy reading. You can help your child visualize by stopping every so often while reading aloud and asking questions such as:

  • What do you see in your mind as I read to you?
  • What words did you hear in the story that helped you create that picture in your mind?

In addition to stopping and discussing the story with your child, you might:

  • Ask your child to close his or her eyes as you read and get a mental picture of the story.
  • Give your child the opportunity to draw what he or she visualized, and then talk about the drawing.

We have been focusing on the following terms in Unit 4:

  • Line of Symmetry divides a figure in half so that if you fold along the line, the two halves match each other exactly.
  • Congruent is the same size and shape.
  • Quadrilateral= 4 sides or 4 angles
  • Parallelogram=4-sided shape that has 2 pair of parallel sides. The parallel sides are also the same length.
  • Rhombus=parallelogram with all four sides the same length.
  • Square=a rectangle whose sides are all the same length.
  • Rectangle=parallelogram whose corners are all right angles.

Look closely at our skeleton project. What do you notice? First you will see that there is one line of symmetry. Did you even notice that the ribs are the student’s name written in cursive?

Math Facts

Today I sent home information regarding a math site ( http://xtramath.org/home ) that offers additional practice of basic math facts. This is a free site that allows your child to progressively practice addition, subtraction and once these are mastered multiplication facts.  It is extremely important that we review these daily and increase accuracy/speed in the process.  I will be sending home flash cards with many of the students later next week for homework (especially if they are still relying on using their fingers to solve a problem). I would love it if they could become more rote with basic addition & subtraction facts. It would be GREAT if your child could get on this site for a quick review three times per week. I will be receiving a progress report weekly.

Math Homework

I decided to try having the kids complete their homework using the blog. They will have until Wednesday to submit their answers. Hopefully they will be using a scrap piece of paper at home to practice proof drawings. We discussed another new math vocabulary word for parents instead of “borrowing,” it is called “ungrouping.” We did many examples today but if  you or your child are unsure of the process, just let me know and I will work with them at school.
