Writer’s Workshop Homework

Posted on

The students have had approximately 45 minutes a day for the past 3 weeks to gather facts and begin generating paragraphs about a place. They have had the opportunity to look through books and articles to locate facts. If your child brought home his/her composition book this evening, he/she needs to add facts. Please encourage them to do this so that we can continue to progress through our research unit. Thanks!

Return Composition Book: November 19th

Today your child is coming home with an empty composition book. The goal is to have your child write 10 minutes a night (yes, they can do more if they choose). They will write in a special, quiet place and reflect on an event from the day. You will need to trust that they are doing it and maybe help them by setting a timer. They do not need to share what they wrote with you because some of the pieces aren’t ready to be shared and I promised them that they are writing only for their eyes (but they can share it with others later if they choose).

Things we are learning:

Our lives are made up of not only what happens to us but also our responses to what happens to us. (Add feelings to our stories)
Pay attention to details and write about what you are thinking during the day.
Both readers & writers need to form pictures in their minds. Form a picture in your mind and write about it. Show Don’t Tell!
Stop and Ask, “What was I thinking/feeling?” Give clues that reveal your thoughts and feelings. Add thoughts and feelings in the heart of the story.

Social Studies Project

Posted on

On Monday, a Social Studies project went home. In class we identified the Landforms, Bodies of Water, and Human characteristics of Michigan we have learned about in class. We looked at a map to see where they are in Michigan.

As part of the project your child should place these places on the map and label them. Don’t forget to make it neat and color it. There is a checklist that also goes with the project to make sure you get the full points.

We have identified these places in class, however, your child may need some guidance from parents to label correctly and find specific locations. You may also use any notes from class.

This project is due Friday, October 30.

Have fun with your map! Let me know if you have any questions!

I decided to try having the kids complete their homework using the blog. They will have until Wednesday to submit their answers. Hopefully they will be using a scrap piece of paper at home to practice proof drawings. We discussed another new math vocabulary word for parents instead of “borrowing,” it is called “ungrouping.” We did many examples today but if  you or your child are unsure of the process, just let me know and I will work with them at school.

Spelling Update

We are working on the following words: below, saw, something, thought, both, never, very, just, were, our, too, friends, important, river & today. The children are given a dictation sentence test at the end of the unit and if mistakes are made, they place them on a word list in their spelling binder to refer to during writing activities. Some children are also given a word list that focuses on a specific feature such as: long or short i. This group is intended to focus on specific features that a child requires an additional review to increase his/her success. For homework, please have your child visit the spelling link on the lower left corner of the blog. They should complete an activity for unit 2.
