Pioneer Field Trip

Posted on

On Tuesday, May 30, we will go to DeGraaf Nature Center for a Pioneer Living field trip.  We will learn how the pioneers fed, clothed, and sheltered themselves with a visit to the life-size Pioneer Cabin. Students will participate in pioneer chores such as carding wool, sawing wood, grinding corn, and cooking over the fire.

Please dress for the weather.  We will be in and outside all morning. We will be back to school in time for lunch if students would still like hot lunch for that day. All parents are welcome to come but will to drive separately and pay $3 upon arrival. Feel free to carpool with someone else that is attending (The address is: 600 Graafschap Rd., Holland MI 49423). The following parents are free as their names were drawn as chaperones:

  • Holly Gort
  • Sara Beckett
  • Rachel Peck

Our class will be traveling to the Outdoor Discovery Center on January 20th to study winter ecology by snowshoe! We are very excited to go on this field trip.  Our classes will be able to explore a natural area in winter on snowshoes with a naturalist. We will be able to experience habitats, adaptations, and predator and prey relationships.

Your child will need all of their warmest clothing (mittens, hats, snow pants, and snow boots along with a lunch from home.  We will be outside for the entire morning, so PLEASE DRESS WARM!!

If you are interested in chaperoning, we can take five chaperones per class for free, but unfortunately you will need to drive. We will randomly choose five parents for each class to attend for free. If you are not chosen, you are  welcome to join us, but will need to pay the $4.50 admission. We will leave the school at 9:00 and will depart about 1:00.  Please email me if you would like to come.

Please send $1.50 to school with your child by Thursday, January 13th.

Thank you PTC for covering the rest of the cost for us!

We had an amazing day and it really didn’t seem that cold. Some of the students favorite things to do were when they were able to pet the animals after lunch. They also liked to look at the elk and couldn’t believe that the large antlers fall off in spring. We also found out that a skink was a lizard. There were a few tumbles when snowshoeing but with teamwork we were able to get up. We also found out that the needles of the White Pine are in groups of 5 and you can eat them.

Field Trip on Thursday

Posted on

Our field trip is tomorrow. Please remember to send your child to school with comfy clothes, tennis shoes, sunscreen, disposable water bottle, and sack lunch.

Parents are welcome to come, but will need to provide their own transportation to each location. Please arrive at school in the morning with your child. That way we can tell you what group of kids you will be in charge of and can possibly set up car pools.

I can’t believe that our year is quickly coming to a close. I wanted to let you know about our end of the year field trip on May 29th. We will begin our adventure at Pigeon Creek Park and end with lunch at Tunnel Park. We typically leave school at approximately 9:00 and parent chaperones will need to drive separately. A note will be coming home in the next week.
