As part of our celebrating the remaining days in “Third Grade,” we had a Tasty Treat on Friday while we looked back at all our past writing pieces and will have a Hat and/or crazy sock day on Tuesday. Some students left early so they missed our drumroll with the announcement. Please spread the word about Hat day.
Also, we have our field trip scheduled for the morning so dress for the weather. The bus will arrive at approximately 9:40 at the nature center.
On Tuesday, May 30, we will go to DeGraaf Nature Center for a Pioneer Living field trip. We will learn how the pioneers fed, clothed, and sheltered themselves with a visit to the life-size Pioneer Cabin. Students will participate in pioneer chores such as carding wool, sawing wood, grinding corn, and cooking over the fire.
Please dress for the weather. We will be in and outside all morning. We will be back to school in time for lunch if students would still like hot lunch for that day. All parents are welcome to come but will to drive separately and pay $3 upon arrival. Feel free to carpool with someone else that is attending (The address is: 600 Graafschap Rd., Holland MI 49423). Next week we will begin working on fun summer words with activities. There will not be a test on these words.
Your child brought home our last math test that reviewed concepts from the entire year. In small groups, we will be reteaching, practicing and reassessing areas in which your child earned a score lower than a 3. Please keep in mind that some target areas only had 1-3 questions so it didn’t allow for any errors. The information on this test can be used for suggested review areas during the summer. The students are very familiar with Mobymax and Study Island and can continue with these during the summer.
Those that didn’t struggle will be completing challenge activities with performance tasks during this time. All of our math units have been completed.
We will be writing an outline for our speech/presentation at school but practicing their speech and making any additional props like the posters seen below for a Living Bio Museum will need to be done at home. If you are doing a frame or poster, it is due on May 25 (the day before the performance so we can practice with it). My wonderful 3rd graders took the challenge that if they earned 5 Outstanding certificates in specials they would receive a fort day. Well, they did it! The students demonstrated teamwork, avoided talking out of turn, stayed focused, completed work, encouraged others, had good behavior and great clean-up skills. Our fort day will be on Friday so students may bring a favorite book to read, blanket, wear their PJs and as an extra M-Step bonus can bring a stuffed animal and will watch a short movie.
Please avoid appointments on M-Step day but if your child is sick please keep them home. It appears that the flu has started going around in our classroom and it is better that they remain home to get healthy. There will be a day to make up any missed portions.
It is always great to start the day with a good breakfast but especially during our test days. We will be taking the M-Step on the following days:

Hi, I am Harrison. I’m the blog reporter for Mrs. McDonald’s class. This is what we are doing in class,
Language arts: our mentor sentence is a compound sentence which means two sentences put into one joined with and, or, but. According to Alexa, “I think that compound sentences are fun sentences to write because your stories could have more descriptions.” We reviewed homophones in Unit 31 for spelling.
Math: We talked about equivalent fractions. We worked on fractions in a group session on the computers. We also wrote fraction word problems with a flower art project. Brady stated, “We are working on fractions and equivalent fractions are cool because it is a fraction that equals another.”
Social Studies: When asked about social studies, Will, “We are learning about economics. We had 2 tests one on human, capital, and natural resources and another one on scarcity and opportunity costs.” Ask us how we did.
Writing: We are on our final draft. Nora stated, ” I like researching about people and learning new things or facts.”

Hello, my name is Harrison. I am the Blog Reporter in Mrs.McDonald’s 3rd grade class. We are back from spring break. We made thank you notes for the staff. Here is what we worked on this week:
In writing we are working on our rough draft on our person we researched. We should have had all our notes completed to do this.
In social studies we finished up geography and started on economics. We studied natural resources, human resources, and capital resources.
In math we started our fractions unit. We learned about numerator and denominator. We used number lines and fraction bars for fractions.
In language arts, we reviewed spelling patterns for unit 29 (oi, ou, oy, ow). We started mentor sentences. Our mentor sentence was a declarative sentence which means a statement.
In art we had our after Spring Break favorites day. We used computer coding in STEAM. We played games about computer coding on a website called Hopscotch. We had favorites day in gym. In music we had favorites day too.
