Changes in Holiday Parties

Posted on

Parents,

This year our Third Grade team is going to try something a little different with our Party schedules.

Our Halloween and Valentine celebrations will be run by the teacher and held throughout the entire school day. They will only include the students and teacher. We are hoping this helps to lighten your load. If you volunteered to help, we will be contacting you for donations. And, we are excited about some of the fun activities we plan to include in those celebrations. We promise to take lots of pictures and share them with you!  We will celebrate Halloween on Monday, October 31.  Please send your child’s costume to school with them that day.

We are going to have our Christmas Party with parents on Tuesday, December 20.  More details will come!

Plant Parts

Posted on

Plant parts is our next unit in science and it is a great review. In second grade, the students were responsible for identifying the parts of a plant, as well as, in first grade. We will be talking about the parts of a plant and the function of each part. Flashcards were sent home today and I will assess the students on Tuesday. After the plant part test, we will build on our knowledge of plant parts by focusing on plant adaptations (for approximately 1-2 weeks).

Here are the flashcards if you did not see them in the nightly folder: NOTECARDS FOR PLANTS. This site also has a quiz & matching game as a review. For more plant part review, feel free to visit the Great Plant Escape website at GREAT PLANT ESCAPE WEBSITE.

Meet Kieran

Posted on

Hi my name is Ella and I’m the teachers helper. I asked Kieran questions so that we could get to know him better (seeing he is new to Georgetown). His birthday is July 9th  and he is 9. His favorite color is blue. He has a Mom, Dad, 2 sisters and 1brother. He loves Christmas for a holiday. His favorite month is July because his birthday is in July. He loves to eat steak too. A snake is his favorite animal. When he grows up he wants to be a engineer. His favorite board game is Connect Four. He likes to go to Florida for vacation. He likes baseball as a sport. If he could have a wild animal pet he would have a grizzly bear. He would have a motorcycle as a favorite vehicle. He likes to eat cake for dessert. That’s all about Kieran that I got.

Supporting our School

Posted on

We know that everyone is VERY BUSY with life — work, family events, child activity events and more.  As a result, we know how hard it is to volunteer at school with these  demands on your time.  One simple way EVERY PARENT ( and friends/family of parents) can support our school is through the many business partnerships below.

By ordering through AMAZON SMILE, collecting BOX TOPS, collecting D&W and FAMILY FAIR receipts, recycling your paper into the PAPER GATOR, our school can raise up to $2,000.  We use this money to support activities in our school for all of our children. Information is below on all the donations.

Also…our ONE BIG and ONLY Fundraiser for the year occurs on September 23…the GEORGETOWN WALK•A•THON. Wear RED, WHITE, AND BLUE!

Thank you for your support!  Audrey Straub, PTC President

AMAZON SMILE

amazonA great way to help our school: AMAZON SMILE. Go to your Amazon account via the link below and AMAZON will donate .5% of your eligible purchases to our school. The PTC will use these donations to support learning & family activities at our school. Every DONATION counts …. and adds up!  Please start today…and use this link.

FAMILY FARE and D& W:  DIRECT YOUR DOLLARS

familyfareGeorgetown Elementary PTC has the opportunity to earn $1,000 from SpartanNash Stores:  Family Fare and D&W.   Through the Direct Your Dollars program, we can turn eligible receipts into cash for our organization!

Every time you shop at any Family Fare Supermarket or D&W Fresh Market, save your receipts.  Turn these into school — either via your child’s teacher or the office Direct Your Dollars Box.

For every $150,000 in receipts we collect, we will earn $1,000 donation.  This money D&Whelps  cover costs such as classroom supplies, technology upgrades, books, field trips, parent/child events and other needed items.  NOTE:  We need the ORIGINAL receipt in order for your purchase to count toward our total.

If you aren’t able to drop your receipts off in person, you can also mail them to 3909 Baldwin St, Hudsonville MI 49426.

BOX TOPS

We love this program!  It is very successful — especially with it being led and organized boxtopsby Lori Simpson.  This post has a link to HOW To’s….and we have extra papers in our office.

PAPERGATOR

We love to take your old paper for our HUNGRY PAPER GATOR.  You fill it up and we earn money for our school.  What can go into the PAPER GATOR?

Light Test

Posted on

Your child came home with a review sheet today for our test on Tuesday. If your child misplaced it, I have added the information below:

  • When light is reflected the light hits the object and it bounces off.
  • To make a shadow you need: a light source, an object, and a blocked path.
  • The shadow is shortest at noon.
  • Light travels in straight lines and some waves.
  • When light travels from air to water it slows down and looks like it bends (think about pencil experiment).
  • When a light source is blocked a shadow forms.
  • Man-made light: light bulb, lantern, lamp, flashlight
  • Natural light: sun, stars, firefly
  • Opaque: No light passes through (examples: rock, people, wood)
  • Translucent: Some light passes through (examples: tissue paper, waxed paper)
  • Transparent: Light passes through (examples: glass, overhead, glasses)
  • When light passes through a prism, it separates into colors.
  • Think about the best color shirt to wear on a hot day and why.

Snacks and Birthday Treats

Posted on

This year, each student in Third grade will be responsible for bringing a daily snack in from home to munch on in the morning/afternoon. These snacks are essential to rejuvenate the students’ energy and attention span. This year, it is important that students not only bring healthy snacks, but they also must be NUT FREE SNACKS (All nuts: almonds, pecans, etc.). When packing your student’s snack, please keep in mind the safety of our food allergy friends by choosing a snack off of the following list:

Safe Snack Ideas  (Milk, Egg, and Nut SAFE Snacks)

  • Honey Maid Graham Sticks: Cinnamon and Honey Flavored
  • Teddy Grahams: Cinnamon, Honey, & Chocolate
  • Ritz Dinosaur Crackers
  • Wheat Thins (regular)
  • Saltine Crackers (read label)
  • Most regular pretzels (read label)
  • Most regular potato chips (read label)
  • Most corn chips (read label)
  • Betty Crocker Fruit Snacks and Fruit Rollups
  • Kellogg’s Fruit Streamers and Fruit Twis tables
  • *No baked goods can be sent in from home.

As always, healthy snacks are best:

Raisins, apples, bananas, grapes, melon, carrot sticks, celery sticks, jello, applesauce, peaches, pears, strawberries, blueberries, etc.

The best defense against accidental exposure for our allergy students is to always read the label. At the bottom of the ingredients list there is almost always an allergen warning. Ingredients do change, so always read the label even if you’ve checked on a prior purchase. Thank you to all the parents for being so understanding and respectful of our students with food allergies. Thanks for helping us to keep our students healthy and safe!

Birthday Celebrations:  If you would like to celebrate your child’s birthday with a treat,Screen Shot 2014-08-28 at 11.29.04 PM please send non-food items. Consider items like a pencil, eraser, stickers, etc.  Do not send food for birthday treats.  This will help with our gluten-free restrictions too.

Light Unit

Our first science unit focuses on light. This unit will last just over a week. Today your child was given flashcards to take home to study that include specific vocabulary words that we used already during the unit. They will see these words on the assessment.

If your child wants to complete matching activities or quizzes on these words, Please visit this link: Light Notecards.
