Believe it or not, it is already that time of year to complete the holiday coloring page (these were sent home yesterday). There is no obligation to participate, but if your child is interested in doing this, the papers are due OCTOBER 27.

Posted onPlant Adaptation Test Tomorrow
Posted onOur plant adaptation test is tomorrow. Yesterday, the students brought home their invented plant. This will help them on the test so it would be a good idea to review it.
Writer’s Workshop
Posted onWe have been determining the big idea by reading several writing pieces and discussing what makes up a personal essay. The students have generated their own big ideas and supported their ideas with 2 mini-stories. In this unit, the students will write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons. They will use transitions to connect their opinions and reasons together. Their essays will have at least 4 paragraphs.
Typing Practice
Posted onWe have a typing challenge this week. The children are required to keep their fingers on the “home row keys.” If you have computer access at home, we have recommended a couple of websites for your child to practice their typing skills on.
- Dance Mat Typing http://www.bbc.co.uk/
schools/typing/ - Typing Practice (lessons, games, and typing tests)http://www.
freetypinggame.net ) - All the Right Type ALL THE RIGHT TYPE (student’s school username and password is needed)
It is very important that your child is using the correct fingering when they practice their typing so as not to fall into a bad habit of using the incorrect fingers.
Hudsonville Public Schools has set the following goals in keyboarding for your elementary child:
- Fifth Grade has a typing goal of 20 words per minute by the end of the school year.
- Fourth Grade has a typing goal of 15 words per minute by the end of the school year.
- Third Grade has a typing goal of 10 words per minute by the end of the school year.
Congratulations
Posted onSpelling Words for October 12th
Posted onToday we discussed ways to improve our spelling test scores and I encouraged the students to write their words at home a couple times during the week. At school we complete spelling activities that involve sorting the words, finding words with common spelling patterns when reading, and using the words in sentences. If a student struggled on a specific spelling pattern, we will review these words within a small group setting during our intervention time. Our focus this week is on short vowel & long vowel (CVCe) review.

Posted onPlant Adaptations
Posted onHere is an excellent video by Study Jams to supplement our discussion about plant adaptations. Take a moment to have your child watch the short video. There is even a quiz to “test yourself.” If your child watches it, please have them leave me a comment about something learned because I give them credit for doing some extra work.

Halloween Party
Posted onOur Halloween Party will be on October 29th from 12:15-1:00. Students can change into their costumes right after recess. We have some amazing volunteers helping out with the party. I will let you know if we need any donations. If you are interested in being a lead parent, I would really appreciate it because at this point I do not have anyone to plan the activities.
Look close and you will see our names in cursive with a line of symmetry.
